There have been many big changes in the world of Archie Andrews and the various beloved characters from the Archie Comics universe over the last few years. Everything from alternate reality lives to zombies to even the rebirth of their world when the publisher pulled the reboot lever in 2015.
Now one of the Riverdale residents will face down against death itself, and they will lose.
Archie Comics has announced that in the next story arc of Archie, titled Over the Edge, a drag race between Reggie Mantle and Archie on the ominously named Dead Man’s Curve will claim the life of one character. The story, by Mark Waid and Pete Woods, runs through issues 20-22 of the series and begins in May.
“Up until now, Archie and his pals have led fairly untroubled, normal lives,” said Waid. “Suddenly, in one horrifying instant, that all changes when one of the kids looks death in the eye–and death doesn’t blink.”
The ongoing feud between Archie and Reggie pits them against each other in the drag race in issue #20 before a phone call will change the lives of the Riverdale citizens in issue #21 and the end comes fully for one of the characters with #22.
The obvious pick would seem to be Reggie, as Archie won’t die in his own ongoing series unless it was coming to an end like when he died in 2014’s Life With Archie, but that would seem too obvious of a pick. There are any number of characters that have been introduced and rebooted in Waid’s run so far that could be the one to perish.
